We have a photography business in our home

so we have this big camera room ..

Our family outgrew our living room for Christmas Eve ..

So I made this "pretend room" by using electric fireplace logs, yard sale Christmas trees and whatever else I could find in the house and in the attic (rug)
This is just part of the room ..there is another tree in the room .. I decorated the trees with white paper chains that the family helped make, white snow flakes from the dollar store and silver balls .. The only tree with lights is the "family tree" in front of the window where the gifts will be.. this was a fun project. o<:^)

"Before"

this corner of my kitchen was a crowded, catch-all.. I had used corner shelving that I had to pile stuff on.. the table was wasted space cuz it was round and didn't really leave a lot of room for anything but eating..for two. :^(

Now I have this long table that I can use for a serving table when the family is over.. This old house really has no counter space so it will really come in handy... I'm also using it as a 'baking center'.
In the 'before' picture, you can see this 'spice rack' that had a couple bars under it to hang towels on ...I had my husband cut that part off so now I have my spices at hand when I bake.

I'm ready to bake some Christmas cookies ..

now all I need is a grandkid to come and play with me. o<:^)

I've been on the hunt for just the right cabinet to hang on this wall.. I couldn't believe it when I found this at my neighbor's yard sale.. my DH cut off some stuff I didn't like from the bottom and painted the dark wood white..

it was made to order! .. Thanks Jennifer.

OH...I forgot to mention that I paid "$5.00" for it!!!

Getting ready for Halloween.

You can transfer prints from paper onto clear shelf paper...I left some of the clear shelf paper around these crows because the clear part stays sticky .. To do this just cut a piece of clear shelf paper the size of the image and stick it onto the print.. sticky side to printed side of the image.. on the paper side, rub or burnish it well onto the shelf paper ... then soak it in water for about 10 minutes .. then with your fingers rub off the paper from the back.. I put it on a flat surface and rub it with my wet fingertips .. you will have to wet it a few times ..this takes a little time.. Then lay it out to dry .. it will be sticky again after it's dry.

I got this iron basket at a yard sale a couple weeks ago .. the gal wanted to through the grass away for me...I'm glad I got it before she did cuz it made a perfect nest for my crows. <:^)

If you look really close you will see some black netting I got at a yard sale..It was perfect for 'hanging' birds from it ..

and on a dollar yard sale clock.

I hung tons of crows with fishing line from the ceiling, so when they swing around in the breeze it looks like they're flying... The crows were printed on plastic and then cut out.

We have black walnut trees in our yard

so this time of year there are tons of crows that come to feast on the fallen nuts ..
Watching the crows and listening to them all day inspired me to fill my porch with crows and a couple of rats.

I buy a few crows at the Dollar Tree every year ..

and this year they had great rats!

Black spray paint and old cages.

I got the chandelier at a yard sale for $3.00 and sprayed it black.

I used to have tea parties for kids and one thing I learned was to just keep them busy and keep them moving .. At this age their attention span is not very long..

....And just go with the flow

cuz it will never go as planned in you head..
But it always turns out more fun then you planned

and so much fun watching the kids do 'their own thing".

Our house is 95 years old and has a full basement that my husband uses as a workshop .. Somebody built a 'bomb shelter' below the basement ..We think it must have been during the Cuban crises when people were building shelters. We have always used the 'shelter' to store piles of junk, but my husband has always called it his 'wine cellar' ..So while he was gone for a couple of days our daughters and I cleaned it out, painted it and turned it into a real "wine cellar" to surprise him...The two little pictures above where hung there to cover the two 'air vents'..This is a little passage way to the shelter door.

"AFTER"

We bought a mirror at a yard sale and replaced it with a print of a wine label he had designed for a friend who was bottling wine ... The picture is special to him because he only has one bottle of the wine left and his friend has since passed away.
If you'll notice the 'cork rug' we made from cutting corks in half and hot gluing them onto a rubber mat. ..Funny but not so funny story about the 'rug' ... It took hours and hours to cut and glue the corks and on the day we were working on the cellar we put the 'rug' outside, upside down on the driveway .. well, the 90 degree sun 'melted' the glue and they all fell off! ...So they had to re-glue the whole thing over again...lol

You can see from this picture that it was filled with years of junk.

This is a view of what he saw when he got home ...

He has since improved on it and is now adding some nice lighting to the room.

Don't mind the women behind the door ... Yes, that's me.

We needed more corks for the rug!...lol

I found the door in a junk store and

my grand daughter painted and decoupaged it.

My crazy son Luis is off running again

My kids never cease to amaze me and today it's my 48 year old son Luis who is running "135" miles in Death Vally ... Why? you ask ... I sure don't know ...but he says "if you have to ask, you probably wouldn't understand" .. Well yep ..he's right about that. Luis is a running fool and is always off running 100 mile races when ever he can. ... Do I think he's loony? ... Yep ..I sure do ...Am I proud of him? ... Yep ..I sure am.

Some of the family has been following Michael throughout the ride ..They started in San Francisco and should be in Los Angeles on Saturday.. It's been a lot of fun and exciting ..and a lot of endurance for these dedicated people who are out there to help raise money to 'fight aids' .. Michael's Mom had T shirts made for the family.

I am so proud of Michael and of every single person who has worked on this ride .. There are hundreds of people who volunteer to do all the work so the riders can ride.

The 'carrot flower' on the left is a baby carrot stuck in the middle of a 'split' green onion which you string onto a wooden skewer .. a baby corn is also really neat to use for the 'flower' but I couldn't find any.This was really fun to make ..

but I have to admit, it took a long time.
To make this bouquet start with a basket and that 'Styrofoam stuff' you use for flower arrangements .. You can use anything you find in the produce department that you think could be made into a 'flower' .. for the stems I used green beans and green onions .. look for the 'fatter' green beans ..some of mine were to thin and would split when I strung them on the wooden skewer, make radish flowers and baby carrots flowers by cutting into them and then put them in ice water to 'open up' ..I used cucumbers, and red and yellow bell peppers and mushrooms ( the mushrooms are hard to work with cuz the centers fall out when you slice them, but they make a cool flower) The 'leaves' are snap pees and of course there are lots of cherry tomatoes which add a lot of color... I have a flower cookie cutter which is way bigger then the veggies, but the center of it was just big enough to make them look like flowers ..but you can just us a knife or whatever works .. I also used little pieces of carrots and bell peppers for the flower centers .. Just play with it and use whatever works ..I covered the 'Styrofoam' with green sprouts .. I made this for my grand daughter's graduation party ..I served it with a ranch dressing dip on the side ...Everyone "loved it". :^)

I remember the thrill I felt when I got my first clothes dryer ..

Well yesterday I felt the same excitement when my hubby hung

this 'clothesline' for me. :^)

My 'BFF' Cathy brought me stacks of old linens ..she cleaned out an old Aunt's belongings and thought I'd like them .. I always feel so privileged to have something made by hand ..I always feel like they were made "for me".

So I wanted to hang them in the sun to dry and discovered that I really don't have much sun in my yard ..so we hung then clothesline right across my garden in my front yard ...but I love looking out the window and seeing these beautiful linens dancing in the breeze. ...Thank you so much Cathy ..."hugz"

This is a picture of the "cat" he drives up and down the mountains at night while the rest of the world sleeps, getting the snow ready for the skiers.

In the summer, he works as a river rafting guide.. He takes great pride in what he does and is a hard worker and is also "THE NICEST GUY YOU'LL EVER MEET".

These flowers were made by gluing plates together.
I planted these in the window box.

I glued a butter knife on the back for a 'stem'.

have gone to this every year .. Beautiful weather, views of the ocean and junk .. .lots and lots of junk.. Topped off by dinner and a glass of wine while watching the seals play just a couple feet away... What could be better! We always pick one thing as our "prize of the day" .. and I think this rug is my bestest prize of all ...I love it! Then to top it all off .. my grandkids Joshua and Natalie come over and took everything off my porch and washed the walls and floor and put everything back up... That is what I call "A gift from the heart" :^) ♥ LIFE IS GOOD ♥

I know the rabbit head looks more like a dear ..lol .

.but it was my first attempt working with clay a couple years ago ...

it was also my last...Maybe it's the ears ..hmmmm??

I love the Easter grass I made by cutting up sewing patterns...

I really like the color and the texture of pattern paper.
I always buy old patterns at yard sales to use as tissue in gifts,

for wrapping dishes and Christmas ornaments when I pack them away ..

and for using in crafts.

Let's make tortillas

I've been on a quest to make the perfect tortillas .. I grew up with my Mom making piles of tortillas every single day for our family .. but like most Mexican women, she has no recipe for them and besides now that she is in her 90's she does not remember how she made them... I also made them for my family but have not made them for many years but I decided that if I don't teach my grandgirls how to make them then the 'art' will be gone when I'm gone. :^( So after making a couple stacks of 'cracker like' tortillas I got on line to see what I could learn ...

So this is it:

2 cups of flour * 1/2 tsp salt * 1/2 tsp baking powder *

1/4 cup "LARD" ...( yep, "lard"... this is key)

and 3/4 cup of warm water. Mix flour, salt and baking

powder with your hands in a

large bowl. ... add lard and

mix (with your hands) until

lard is well blended, just as

you would do for pie crust ..

add water and knead for at least 5 minutes... cover and let rest for about half hour.

Form dough into 10 to 12 little balls ... cover and let rest for a few minutes.

I have a 'comal' that is made for cooking the tortillas on ..but you can use a heavy cast iron pan or a hot griddle ... flame should be on med. high.

Roll out the tortillas ( making them round takes a little practice but remember they do not have to roll down your throat when you eat them.

Put the tortilla on the hot 'comal' and turn over when you see the little bubbles form ..it only takes about 30 seconds on each side.

Stack them under a dish towel while you make them to keep them warm ... I put them in a zip lock after I'm finished making them.

To warm them you can heat them on an open stove flame ..being very careful not to burn your fingers as you turn them over ..or you can warm them on a griddle .. "do not warm them in the microwave since they will harden just like bread does...But they are best when you eat them right off the griddle. ... That's it! ..."enjoy" ♥

We just got my Mom home from a 5 day stay in the hospital after a fall... I spent the 5 days with her because she is so used to me being with her that I could not leave her .. The doctor wanted to send her to a nursing home from the hospital but we brought her home and hopefully we can care for her here at home and I think with the help of the physical therapist and the home nurses she can stay here with us and her little dog Petunia...She is 91 years old. .. Please keep her in your prayers. ♥

Thanksgiving dishes

I found these dishes at a yard sale many years ago ..

Of course I had to 'rescue' them even though I didn't need them. The set is not complete but there's tons of them

including serving platters and bowls of all sizes.
Now we call them our "Thanksgiving dishes".
I also love using them for Easter with yellow and purple napkins.

To me they look like spring ..but the colors are perfect for fall.

I was soo ready for this nasty old carpet to go

and kept putting off cleaning it as you can see.

Thanks to my grand daughter Natalie, our daughter Tina and her husband Mark it finally got done ... Joe and I could not have done it alone ..Thanks so much guys. :^)
So this is what was under the carpet ...I think it has been covered for 95 years... Of course there were swirls of glue on the wood where they had glued the padding down that had to be removed .. then we just cleaned it with wood floor cleaner .. and lastly, I put Johnson's Paste Wax on it and buffed it with my almost 50 year old buffer.
I love the new floor and it was worth all the work ..
even though today I feel like I've been hit by a truck ...LOL

I have not posted anything for a while cuz things got so crazy in my family ..some good, some not so good .. way to much to write about .. The good thing is that I got to do a little yard sale-ing and one of my "prizes" is this ivy chicken that I put in my laundry room .. I also got the tin pocket on the wall and the cherry garland.. I loved them all and it made my day ...funny how some people's junk can make you so happy. :^)

Life gone crazy!

Hi all my blogging pals ... I have not posted for a while cuz my life got so crazy .. My Mom just celebrated her 91st birthday ... family from out of town ( always fun) .. impromptu party at my house .. my husband got hit by a car walking to the bank ... I got an ambulance ride to the hospital with him and a couple hours in the ER.. ( he's banged up but doing fine) .. back to the ER at 2:00am the same night with my Mom cuz she had food stuck in her esophagus .. "11 hours" in the ER waiting for a specialist to come from the next town to remove the food .. (she is also doing better ) .. then taking care of my Mom trying to get her stronger and wondering what I can feed her ...etc. ... But things seem to be calming down now ... thank God! ...So now I'm just busy taking care of Mom and trying to get my gardens back in some kind of shape since I've had to neglect everything .. I've started a "support group" with a few friends who take care of their elderly parents and that really helps .. It's a fun group and we eat, have some wine and share our stories and ideas ... It's really helpful and fun to have people over since it's hard for me to get away ...so things are looking up .. and again I say "Thank God"! ♥

Garden Party

The weather has been so beautiful that I decided to have a garden party .. So I invited some good friends ... asked them to wear white ..and made a bunch of food.
I used mint and a couple of white flowers as a centerpiece.
I covered a wire lampshade to cover the sandwiches and now it's on my lamp in the living room. :^)
I also filled tea pots with "flower pens" to give as part of my hostess gifts.
It was such a treat for me to spend time with friends that I don't get to see often enough. ... I'm sure I'll do it again soon. :^)

Put biscuits on greased cookie sheet ... sprinkle with chopped nuts and sugar .. pour melted butter over the top ... Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees... Mix 3/4 cup powered sugar, 2 tablespoons juice from an orange with some orange zest and pour on top .. That's it .. it's soo fast and soo Yummy!
(Make sure you use layered biscuits)

This is my daughter Jennifer and her son *Michael*
Michael is riding in the 'Aids Ride' this week.
He and 'thousands' of other riders are riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles to help raise money to fight this horrible disease ...This is Michael's second year in this ride...It is over 500 miles and it takes them one week .. They are 'half way there'!! ...I am very proud of this guy.
Also in the picture with Michael and Jennifer is our friend Justin who is also in the ride and Michael's sister Maegann.

Does anyone know what happened to my Hydrangea??? ... I have not pruned it for about 3 years cuz I learned that it only blooms on 'old wood' .. it has been doing really well with lots of beautiful flowers ..and now it seems to be only leafing on half of the plant ...Is it dead???? ... Of course this is the year that my yard is going to be in a 'garden tour' ..."On June 6"!!!
I have bought a new one and am planting it right in front of this one ..but of course it will not be tall and beautiful in 3 weeks. :^(
Shall I cut the old one back or shall I dig it out??
I hope someone out there can help me.

I bought this at a yard sale last weekend and I was very surprised that my '30 something' son-in-law didn't know what it was.

Back in the day we all had one of these in our kitchen sinks since we didn't have garbage disposals ... at least not in our house .. so you would put your garbage in it and then take it out to the 'garbage can' ..for the 'garbage man' to pick up .. I remember the smell of the garbage cans as we walked past them on our way to school... not good :^( ...lol
Some people would take the garbage out to the chickens ..but I lived in the city so we didn't have chickens .. well, except for the ones my brothers would try to keep as pets.
by-the-way .. my 95 year old kitchen does not have a garbage disposal so I will keep this in my sink and really use it.
I remember my Friend telling me that on her moving day he son was taking the ironing board to the truck and asked .."Mom, what' is this"?

My Mom's Cottage

My Mom was born in Mexico in 1919 ..She came to Texas when she was four years old where she was raised, went to school, met and married my Father...then they moved to California where we were raised ... She was a wonderful Mother to us five kids and was always so much fun to be around .. I think she enjoyed mothering since she was raised by her father since her Mother died when she was just a little girl .. about 6 years old .. She worked hard cooking, washing, and even rolled tortillas every single day for our family .. Back in those days our moms didn't drive so if we went anywhere we all got on the bus or the street car or 'walked' .. We never had babysitters because our mom took all five of us everywhere she went... There was really no such thing as "day care" ..pre-school ... nannies or any of those things ...not in our neighborhood anyway ..lol ..Our home was full of music and loud kids ..Our friends were always welcome and there was always plenty of food to feed anyone we brought home ... actually in those days we would go from house to house on our block with our friends and all of our mothers always feed us all... It was a great time and since we stayed close to home after school and on weekends us kids really did get to know and bond with our Moms ... Weekends were nice cuz you could stay in your PJ's and sit on the floor and watch TV all day ..or go out and play marbles, jacks, ride our bikes or skate..etc. ... we'd stay outside playing "statue maker" .."hide and seek" .. or "Mother My I" until it got dark... We really didn't join any after school sports or clubs because there really wasn't money to join those things ..and besides we had our brothers and sisters and our friends to play with .. For me and my siblings .."Those were the good ol' days" .. just as for my kids and grandkids .."these" are their good ol' days. for them. :^)
One thing I forgot to mention is that my Mom was such a huge help to us in high school because she was studying US History along with us .. It was a very exciting day for her when she became an "American citizen" .. She was so happy to be able to vote and always impressed how important that privilege is for us Americans .. She voted until she no longer really knew what she was voting for.

Here are a couple pictures of my Mom's little cottage that she lives in now ..it's right outside our back door ..and as you can see, it started out as a garage ...These pictures were taken a few years ago ..but I'm sorry to say it does not look this cute today ..but I'm working on it. ..It's actually all "pretend" .. the window pains are just 'tape' that I put on the plain glass .. The window box that you can hardly see is a 'chicken feeder' that I hung ..and the picket fences are just pieces of fence that I leaned on the house .. I love the purple flowers .. I bought a little bag of seeds from a little girl at a yard sale without knowing what they were ...I planted them .. and "waala"!!
The screen door is just a screen door and I wired the frilly things on it to make it look cutesy .. they are really plant hangers.
All that cute stuff has been stripped off to paint the house ..so it's very plain this year ..but like I said .."I'm working on it".

My dear Mom is almost 91 years old now and I have had the privilege of having her live with me for the past 20 years ...she lives in her own little cottage right outside my back door that she shares with her beloved pets .. her dog, Petunia and her cat, Frankie. ..She is such a sweet lady and I am blessed to be able to spend this time of her life with her.
My Mom, Enriqueta, had five kids and she was always so much fun and worked so hard taking care of us ..and now I get to take care of her ..
We are blessed. :^)

These two chairs were amongst the stuff I brought home from my morning of yard sale-ing ... There is also an ottoman that goes with the chairs, but I think it's too big for this little room.

After I got them home I was afraid I didn't have any place to put them .. but since we really never used the table I decided to replace it with the chairs..I think we'll use the room more now.

This is not a very big room and unfortunately I have to share it with my DH since he paints and there is great light in here for painting ... you can't see his half of the room in these picture.

I'm baby sitting this birdbath for my daughter Jennifer so I thought it would be safer in here then outside with the neighborhood cats.

Today I promised myself to not go to another yard sale ...until ..

I need to either purge or organize ...

I don't have a tiny house ..

..but it's feeling smaller and smaller all the time cuz I just can't find a place to put all this 'wonderful stuff'.

So the only answer is for me to have a yard sale ......

OK ..I gotta say .."this was over the top" ... even for me...lol

These are the "treasures" I brought home...

This is my dear friend Mary Ann ...

we are soo excited to go in and start our 'hunting'.

So this is what's inside of the "Goodwill warehouse outlet" ... Barrels and barrels ..big bins full of clothes and whatever ...big tables piled high with clothes and blankets and pillows ... old furniture, lamps ... etc. ..etc. ....this is the last stop for this "stuff" before it goes to the dump ...lol

So you dig through the barrels and never know what you'll find ...you can hear the workers dumping the 'left overs' into a truck outside to go to the dump.

Me and Mary Ann fighting over some Styrofoam balls.. "hey, what happened to them"? ... they never make it home with us ...hmmmm??

I had heard about this place ... but like I said ..it was really something ..even for card carrying dumpster divers like me and Mary Ann...lol

Did we get some good deals? ... hmmm? ... maybe ... maybe not ... the guy just looks at the pile of stuff and tells you how much it will cost ... we really didn't even know what was in our pile ..so we just paid what he said ..."$20.00" for all of it ... ( there is more that is not in the picture) ... Was $20.00 too much to pay for a pile of junk?... maybe

Craft project from my dear friend Mary Ann

Whenever my friend Mary Ann and I are together we always find time to do a little crafting ... Mary Ann is an amazing artist and always has wonderful things to teach me ... unfortunately we live too far apart to get much 'play time' in... she and her dear husband Abe are in town for a few days so we got to spend some time playing ... This is a picture of one of the journals she taught me to make ..."what a fun project"!

Actually the 'pages' are supposed to be made out of brown paper lunch bags, which gives you 'pockets' to put pictures or cards, or whatever in ...but for this one I just used paper since I didn't have any bags ... as you can see the 'spine' of the book is made by weaving chop sticks in and out of slots you cut into the paper.

Funny how things happen ... the day after Mary Ann taught me how to make the book I went yard sale-ing and found a box full of vintage chop sticks!

Saint Patrick's Day

I wish I could take the credit for this cute idea ...

but of course I saw something like this on line.

The one I saw was not for Saint Patrick's Day

but I thought I could make it work.
These are the things I used.

I didn't have a stencil to make the shamrocks so I stuck one of these chair pad things to the end of a pencil ... I don't have a close up of the "Shamrocks" to show you ..but I just dipped the little pad in paint and made three dots and a stem .... You get the picture. :^)
I cut the big "Shamrock" out of the plastic yogurt lid.

My grandson Frankie made the cup cakes ... We made this as a hostess gift to take to his mom's house ...She makes corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day every year ... Yummy

You never know how your day will turn out when you wake up in the morning ... You know what they say ..

Today was a great example of this ... I've had a lot on my plate, to say the least for the past couple of days .. but I was still trying to get in the grove of Saint Patrick's Day ... I have to admit that my heart wasn't in it ...then Frankie stopped by with his dad and asked if he could stay and help make the cup cakes.. Of course I said yes. :^)

It was so much fun watching him work and to see how proud he was about what he was doing ... Besides, I learned so much from him today ...

Can you believe that Frankie and his friend almost caught a Leprechaun today! ...Really! .. He said his friend stuck his hand in a hole in the ground at school today and "something" pinched him ...so they knew for sure it had to be a Leprechaun! ... I also learned from Frankie that Leprechauns are really very nice and that they would never embarrass anyone...
But ...they are very "tricky"

It's amazing how much you can learn from a 7 year old ..

and it's also amazing how a 7 year old can brighten even the glummest day.

They are not a bit as pretty as Rhea's ... but we did have a lot of fun 'trying' to make them ... and

Well ...because of my friends in "blog land" ... I'm on a roll of staining 'everything' I find with coffee ... first the white flowers and then these little guys I found at the Dollar Tree .. There was a time I wanted everything sparkling white ...but now I want everything to look "O-L-D" ....lol

Happy 20th birthday Nat!

Natalie is the oldest of my grand girls .. She's such a great young lady ..If you need help she's always there with her sun shinning smile ... She's a great daughter, sister, cousin, grand daughter and friend ... she is one of the most well rounded young people I know ... she's great at her job working with social services with foster children, she's a great student, she's great at almost any sport, she can cook, sew, she can be found outside mowing the lawn or playing with children ... she's just a pleasure and we're blessed to have her in our family ....HAPPY BIRTHDAY NAT!

My son Luis is an ultra runner and his little dog Sugar was also an ultra runner .. she ran right along side of him and not only helped him get through his races but she would also run back to the runners who were behind him just to make sure they were OK ... She had many friends in the running world and was loved very much by Luis and his family. ..Today Sugar lost her life after being hit by a car ... Luis and his family buried her on one of the trails where she ran many times with her friend Luis. ..She will be missed.

I bought this stack of huge cupcake looking papers a long time ago ... Not knowing what to do with them..????

Then I won Linda's give-a-way at

It was a little bag of treasures.

So thanks to Linda and another blog where I got the idea to make flowers out of coffee filters, I made this Valentine ball to hang over my dinning room table using the cupcake papers instead of coffee filters and some of the things I got from Linda.
Please let me know if anyone knows the blog that showed how to make the coffee filter flowers ... I've looked and looked but I can't find it.

I have been looking for something that would fit in this small space for years ..actually I've always wanted a Hoosier cabinet but there was no way ...

Here it is! ... It was in a little shop in town ... We measured and re-measured ..and then measured some more ..and "yes"! ... It was made to order... As you can see it was made for that spot .... I am so happy ... and when I'm happy ... everybody is happy. :^)
